The Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, Hon. Alabi Bliss Oshionogue, has been impeached by members of the legislative arm of the council.
Oshionogue’s removal was conveyed in a letter signed by seven councillors, who accused him of multiple acts of misconduct and abuse of office.
The impeachment reportedly took place just hours after lawmakers at the Edo State House of Assembly were unable to hold a planned peace meeting between the chairman and the seven councillors amid escalating tensions within the council.
Sources familiar with the development said the crisis deepened after three councillors who did not attend the meeting allegedly made moves to remove the seven councillors. In response, the seats of the three councillors were declared vacant, further intensifying the power struggle.
It was gathered that the seven councillors proceeded to Igarra, the headquarters of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, where they formally issued the impeachment letter removing Oshionogue from office.
The letter read in part:
“We, the undersigned members of Akoko Edo Local Government Area Legislative Arm hereby impeach you as the acting Local Government Council Chairman with effect from today, the 28th January, 2026.
This decision is as a result of your abuse of office, high handedness, embezzlements of Council funds, anti-party activities, financial recklessness, forgery and constant disobedience to constituted authorities.”
A video circulating on social media showed the moments the embattled chairman was booed as he exited the council premises, highlighting the tension surrounding the development.
Efforts to get an official response from the Edo State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Paul Ohonbamu, were unsuccessful, as calls placed to him were not answered as of the time of filing this report.
