Governor Godwin Obaseki’s Free Bus Ride Scheme has already proven to be a resounding success in Edo State, benefiting over 700,000 commuters in just one month since its launch. This initiative, introduced by the State Government, offers a much-needed respite to residents following the fuel subsidy removal, which has resulted in soaring living costs.
The Edo State Commissioner for Communications and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, provided insights into the scheme’s impressive performance. Governor Obaseki introduced the program on September 11, 2023, with the intention of running it for an initial two months. It forms part of the government’s welfare package aimed at alleviating the financial burdens on the people of the State, especially the most vulnerable, due to the adverse impact of the fuel subsidy removal.
Analyzing data generated during the scheme’s first month, Nehikhare reported that 14,324 passengers benefited from the inter-city service, while 692,074 passengers benefited from the intra-city service. If commuters were required to pay for these services, the total amount saved by the commuters during this one-month period would amount to an impressive N314,665,500.
Nehikhare emphasized the scheme’s popularity among Edo residents and the significant relief it has brought them. The Commissioner stated, “This free bus ride has become popular among Edo people. It is helping them save their transport money since the service commenced on the 11th of September. Edo people have been directly touched by these initiatives. We are pleased by the appreciation we have received from Edo people since the program commenced.”
He also stressed the government’s commitment to Edo residents’ welfare, acknowledging that transportation expenses used to consume nearly 50% of families’ budgets. With the free bus service, families can allocate this money to other essential needs like food and housing.
Nehikhare urged the people to make the most of the ongoing free bus service, which is expected to continue for an initial two-month period. Approximately 1,500,000 commuters are anticipated to benefit from the service during this time.
The scheme covers existing routes operated by the Edo City Transport Services, spanning the three senatorial districts of the State, ensuring that a broad section of the population can access this valuable assistance.
