The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the signing of the peace accord for the Edo State governorship election, slated for September 12, 2024, in Benin City.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made the announcement during a meeting with political parties in Abuja, stating, “The signing of the Peace Accord for the Edo State governorship election will take place on Thursday, September 12, 2024, in Benin City. This will add further weight to the peace accord beyond mere ceremony as demanded by many observers and even some of the political actors themselves.”
Yakubu also revealed that a Mock Accreditation exercise will be held on September 10 to test the deployment of Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines and result uploads.
With just 22 days left until the election, Yakubu expressed satisfaction with the commission’s preparations, saying, “We have successfully completed 10 out of 13 planned activities… We are now left with three outstanding activities, namely the publication of Notice of Poll, the last day of campaigns, and the election day itself.”
The INEC chairman assured stakeholders that key preparations, including the installation of BVAS machines and printing of voters’ registers, are complete, and that the commission is finalizing arrangements with transport unions and training ad-hoc staff.
