The State House has confirmed the heartbreaking passing of Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, who died at the age of 56 on Tuesday night in Lagos after a period of illness.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, deeply saddened, extended his condolences to Lagbaja’s family and the Nigerian Armed Forces, describing his loss as a monumental void for the nation.
Lt. General Lagbaja, born on February 28, 1968, began his distinguished military career in 1987 at the Nigerian Defence Academy, later commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1992. Over his career, he held critical roles, including as a platoon commander in the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion. His efforts in national security were pivotal, contributing to operations such as Operation ZAKI in Benue, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in the Southeast, and Operation Forest Sanity in Kaduna and Niger States.
Known for his leadership and dedication, Lagbaja was an alumnus of the U.S. Army War College, where he earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies, further honing his expertise. Appointed Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, he served with a commitment to the safety and stability of Nigeria.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Mariya, and their two children. President Tinubu has requested prayers and support for the family as the nation honors Lt. General Lagbaja’s legacy and lifelong contributions.
