Tuesday January 21 – The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Edo State Council has strongly criticized the Department of State Services (DSS) for allegedly assaulting journalists covering the Edo State Election Petition Tribunal on Monday, January 20, 2025.Â
During the tribunal proceedings, a disturbance occurred involving suspected political thugs led by Tony Kabaka, a known supporter of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state. Videos captured Kabaka insisting that if he and his associates were to leave the tribunal premises, journalists present in a bus should also depart.
In an official statement signed by Chairman Festus Alenkhe and Secretary Andy Egbon, the NUJ described the DSS’s actions as an egregious violation of press freedom and citizens’ rights to information and free speech. The union demanded an unconditional apology from the DSS and assurances that journalists would be allowed to perform their duties without interference. They also called on the Director-General of the DSS and the Edo State Director to address the behavior of their personnel to prevent future incidents.
The NUJ emphasized its commitment to advocating for press freedom and protecting journalists’ rights, urging all stakeholders to join in condemning attacks on democracy and a free press.
