Benin City, Nigeria – The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticized Senator Monday Okpebholo for allegedly disregarding court rulings that ordered the reinstatement of suspended local government chairmen. The party described the governor’s actions as a direct challenge to judicial authority and a threat to democratic governance.
At a press conference in Benin City, PDP leaders accused the Okpebholo administration of deliberately ignoring multiple court judgments that declared the removal of elected council officials illegal. The party warned that Okpebholo’s refusal to comply with these rulings could set a dangerous precedent for governance in the state.
The controversy stems from the Edo State House of Assembly’s decision—influenced by Okpebholo —to suspend several local government chairmen. The PDP argues that these suspensions violate a Supreme Court ruling affirming local government autonomy and contradict the stance of the Attorney General of the Federation, who has condemned such actions as unconstitutional.
Recent court rulings have reinforced the PDP’s position. Justice B.A. Okoh of the Edo State High Court ordered the immediate reinstatement of Hon. Tajudeen Alade, Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government, and directed the Inspector General of Police to ensure his safe return to office. Similarly, Justice O.M. Obayuwana ruled that the impeachment of Hon. Zibiri Marvelous and Hon. Benji Ojietu, Chairman and Vice Chairman of Etsako West Local Government, was unlawful, issuing a perpetual injunction against further interference in their duties.
PDP State Chairman, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, accused the governor of fostering impunity and undermining the judiciary. “The Constitution is clear, and the courts have spoken. Yet, the Okpebholo-led government continues to defy legal directives, jeopardizing democracy and the rule of law,” Aziegbemi stated.
The PDP has urged Monday Okpebholo to comply with the court orders and reinstate all affected chairmen, warning that continued defiance could lead to administrative instability and further legal battles.
