The Edo State Government has commenced the rehabilitation of major drainage systems in Benin City as part of efforts to reduce flooding and improve environmental sanitation.
Officials from the Ministry of Environment said the exercise focuses on clearing blocked drains, reconstructing damaged channels, and enforcing regulations against indiscriminate waste disposal. Areas identified include Ring Road, Uselu, and parts of Upper Mission Extension.
Residents in flood-prone areas have long complained about stagnant water during the rainy season, which often damages property and poses health risks. Authorities say the ongoing works are aimed at preventing such occurrences ahead of the next rainy season.
1The government urged residents to cooperate by avoiding dumping refuse in drainages, stressing that environmental protection is a shared responsibility.
