The Edo State Government has commenced the rehabilitation of several rural roads across the state as part of efforts to improve agricultural productivity and ease transportation challenges faced by farmers.
According to officials from the Ministry of Works, the project targets farm-to-market roads in parts of Edo South, Edo Central, and Edo North, where poor road conditions have hindered the movement of farm produce. Heavy rainfall and years of neglect have reportedly rendered some routes nearly impassable, especially during peak harvest seasons.
Farmers in affected communities welcomed the development, noting that post-harvest losses have increased due to delays in transporting goods to urban markets. Many say transport costs have doubled in recent years, reducing profit margins and discouraging large-scale farming.
The government stated that the rehabilitation will include grading, drainage construction, and resurfacing of critical sections. Officials added that the initiative aligns with broader plans to strengthen food supply chains and support rural economies.
Residents have urged authorities to ensure quality execution and timely completion, stressing the importance of sustained maintenance after the project is concluded.
