Residents of several low-lying communities in Edo State have raised alarm over the risk of flooding, accusing local authorities of neglecting drainage maintenance ahead of the rainy season.
In parts of Benin City including Idogbo, Useh, and Evbuotubu, residents say drainage channels are clogged with refuse, sand, and construction debris. Community members fear that early rainfall could lead to widespread flooding, property damage, and health risks.
Some residents allege that despite repeated complaints to local councils, little action has been taken. Traders and homeowners say previous flooding episodes destroyed goods, displaced families, and led to outbreaks of waterborne diseases.
Environmental advocates have called for urgent desilting exercises and public awareness campaigns, warning that delayed action could turn preventable flooding into a major disaster.
Officials from the Edo State Ministry of Environment acknowledged the concerns, stating that assessments are ongoing and cleanup operations would commence in phases.
