The All Progressives Congress in Edo State on Wednesday conducted its ward congresses across all 192 wards, with leaders emerging largely through consensus despite reports of violence in some parts of the country.
Party officials said the exercise was peaceful and concluded without major disputes. Speaking to journalists at the party secretariat in Benin City, the state chairman, Emperor Jarret Tenebe, alongside delegates from the party’s national secretariat, urged the newly elected ward executives to strengthen grassroots leadership and party structure.
Tenebe described the congress as a significant step in the state’s political development, noting that the process reflected unity, transparency, and inclusiveness within the party. He explained that the party’s National Working Committee issued clear guidelines for the exercise and expressed satisfaction that they were strictly followed across the state.
He added that the successful conduct of the congresses demonstrated cohesion among party members and reaffirmed commitment to internal democracy.
The chairman also charged the newly elected leaders to intensify mobilisation efforts for the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration exercise being conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission, linking the process to preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Tenebe referenced the commitment of Governor Monday Okpebholo to deliver strong electoral support for President Bola Tinubu in the next presidential election, describing the target as a collective responsibility for party members at all levels.
He emphasised that ward structures remain the foundation of the party’s political strength, noting that effective grassroots engagement will determine electoral outcomes at both state and national levels. According to him, the newly elected executives must deepen party presence within communities while promoting participation in voter registration and educating citizens on safeguarding their Permanent Voter Cards.
Tenebe further urged the ward leaders to collaborate closely with local government party structures to sustain unity and organisational stability across the state.
