The Edo State Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Engr. Osasere Evbuomwan, has urged waste managers to redouble their efforts in ensuring the state is kept clean.
The commissioner made the call when he met with waste managers, sweepers, waste evacuators, Head of Environmental Health Offices, senior officers of the State Waste Management Board and other stakeholders in Benin City.
He said there is every need for the state to be clean especially during the yuletide season, adding that as a gateway to other states in Nigeria, Edo State must be clean.
According to him, waste managers and officials supervising sweepers must take their responsibility more seriously by ensuring that all roads in the major cities are swept and waste properly evacuated daily.
Engr. Evbuomwan noted that although there are challenges bedeviling the waste managers’ activities, he assured of the state government’s readiness to put all measures in place to resolve the challenges.
The General Manager, Edo State Waste Management Board, Mr. Osadebamen Charles Imariagbe, urged the waste managers to work together with the Board to complement the effort of the state government in making Edo clean
Imariagbe said waste managers must ensure that they properly evacuate waste on the road irrespective of their zones.
President, Waste Management Association, Mr. Greg Osa Osagiede, urged the government to strengthen the enforcement on waste management in the state.
Other stakeholders at the meeting include; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Sustainability, Edionwe Joel; Consultant to the State Government, Mr. Lucky Wasa; Head of Oredo Local Government Area, Kessington Osifo, among others.
