Benin City, December 3, 2024 – The Association of Telecommunications Companies in Nigeria (ATCON) is set to honor former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, for his transformative reforms in the state’s digital and technology sector. The award ceremony will take place on December 6, 2024, in Lagos, as part of ATCON’s 31st anniversary celebration.
Tony Emoekpere, President of ATCON, announced that Obaseki has been named the “Digital Governor of the Year” in recognition of his pioneering efforts that have positioned Edo State at the forefront of digital innovation in governance. Under Obaseki’s leadership, the state launched its digital policy and established the first state-owned data center in Nigeria.
Obaseki’s administration also transitioned the state’s public and civil service from an outdated analogue system to a fully digitized operation, connecting all local government areas via fiber optics. This e-governance platform has streamlined various government operations, including e-protocols, procurement, education, healthcare, e-petitions, and internal processes, enhancing transparency and public participation.
ATCON highlighted several key initiatives under Obaseki’s tenure, such as the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST) program, the geographic information system (GIS), and advancements in digital skills and innovation. These efforts have set a benchmark for other states to emulate, fostering economic growth and improving the quality of life for Edo residents.
The association commended Obaseki’s commitment to digital excellence, noting that his visionary leadership has yielded remarkable results. The award ceremony will celebrate these achievements and honor Obaseki’s contributions to the digital landscape of Edo State.
