The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has hailed Nigerians for holding steadfast to the belief in one Nigeria, noting that they have defied the odds in working to achieve shared prosperity and economic advancement.
In a statement, the governor said the state government has worked to make life bearable in the face of rising inflation and other economic challenges besetting the country.
According to him, “As we celebrate, I want to use this opportunity to praise the indomitable Nigerian spirit, which has buoyed the average Nigerian to trudge on despite the tremendous challenges, particularly in the last seven years, with rising insecurity, communal clashes and unprecedented economic gloom. Amid the gloomy prospects, the average Nigerian has held strongly to the ideals of a free society, making contributions towards democratic consolidation.
“In our own little way in Edo State, we have made concerted efforts to make life bearable for our people, working with the limited resources at our disposal to deliver on infrastructural projects, transformation of the civil and public service, creating avenues for inflow of private investment and providing a pathway for the empowerment of our youths.”
He added: “Despite the political distractions, we have kept our eyes on the ball, continuing to prioritise the interest of our people and reconfiguring our economy to be responsive, vibrant and productive.
“In recognition of the sacrifices that our citizens continue to make in the face of very difficult and harsh economic and social environment, in May 2022, we increased the minimum wage in Edo State to N40,000 to ameliorate their suffering caused by rising inflation. We also continue to ensure that the business environment is conducive for private businesses to thrive.”
