In a display of political maneuvering that has sent shockwaves through some quarters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, recent appointments made by Governor Monday Okpebholo have reignited tensions within the party. Many supporters of APC Chieftain, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, are voicing concerns that he is being systematically sidelined, as former governor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, solidifies his control over the newly installed governor.
The political landscape in Edo has long been a battleground for competing interests, and these latest developments suggest that Ize-Iyamu’s influence is waning. The animosity between Ize-Iyamu and Oshiomhole can be traced back to a bitter primary election, where Oshiomhole backed Dennis Idahosa, while Ize-Iyamu opted for Okpebholo—a choice that has now come back to haunt him.
Now, just days after assuming office, Okpebholo has not only formed his kitchen cabinet but has also appointed individuals closely tied to Oshiomhole. Barr Musa Ikhilor, Fred Itua, and Gani Audu have been brought into the fold.
An anonymous source from Ize-Iyamu’s camp expressed frustration, stating, “Oshiomhole has effectively taken control of the governor and his administration since the election results were announced.” The insider further lamented that Oshiomhole’s influence extends deep into the presidency, allowing him to dictate terms at will.
As the political climate in Edo becomes increasingly fraught, many are left wondering what future opportunities Ize-Iyamu might have to reclaim his standing. Some insiders speculate that only the chance to secure an Edo South Senate seat in 2027 might quell his rising discontent.
With the election petition tribunal looming, the stakes couldn’t be higher as Oshiomhole continues to maneuver behind the scenes, leaving Ize-Iyamu and his supporters to grapple with a future that seems increasingly uncertain.
