Benin City, January 9, 2025 — The Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Edo State have made a passionate appeal to Governor Monday Okpebholo to employ diplomatic means rather than coercion to address the ongoing crisis with the suspended local government chairmen.
The CSOs argue that a conciliatory approach would foster unity and cooperation, which are essential for the state’s development. They urge the governor to engage in meaningful dialogue with the suspended chairmen to resolve any misunderstandings and to promote peace and stability.
In a statement released by the Coalition of Edo State Civil Society Organizations, they noted, “While we acknowledge the authority of the governor to ensure that local governments operate within the law, we believe that engaging in dialogue and understanding is a more effective approach to resolving this crisis. The use of coercion may only exacerbate tensions and hinder the progress of our state.”
The suspended chairmen have also expressed their willingness to engage in discussions with the governor to find amicable solutions to the issues at hand. They reiterate their commitment to serving the people of Edo State and contributing to the state’s growth and development.
As the situation unfolds, the citizens of Edo State hope for a peaceful resolution that prioritizes the welfare and progress of the state. The governor’s response to this appeal from the CSOs will undoubtedly shape the future dynamics of local governance in Edo State.
