Benin City, Edo State – The Edo State Police Command has issued a strong assurance to the public that the safe return of a police officer and his daughter, abducted earlier this week, remains a top priority.
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday at the command headquarters in Benin, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, confirmed that tactical operations are currently underway to rescue the victims who were kidnapped on February 8.
While specific operational details are being kept confidential to protect the integrity of the mission, CP Agbonika revealed that advanced technology has been deployed to track the perpetrators. He expressed confidence that the officer and his daughter, along with two other individuals kidnapped the same day in Makeke (Akoko Edo LGA), would be rescued unhurt.
Crackdown on Criminality
The Commissioner used the briefing to highlight the command’s recent successes in combating crime across the state. Since January, the Edo Police have apprehended:
- 87 suspected kidnappers
- 14 suspected armed robbers
- 13 suspected murderers
- 15 suspected cultists
Additionally, 30 kidnap victims have been successfully rescued without injury. The police also reported the recovery of a significant cache of arms and ammunition, alongside stolen property including six vehicles and 39 mobile phones.
Zero Tolerance and New Resources
CP Agbonika issued a stern warning to officers regarding unmanned checkpoints, stating that sanctions would be applied to those abandoning their duty posts. He also sent a clear message to criminal elements, declaring Edo State “out of bounds.”
”No forest will be too thick to overcome, no hideout too remote, and no network too fortified to break,” Agbonika asserted.
He acknowledged the critical support received from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo. The command has recently been bolstered by the deployment of a police helicopter and a squadron of drones to enhance aerial surveillance and operational capacity.
Safety During Valentine’s Season
As the Valentine season approaches, the Commissioner urged residents to celebrate love and unity but to remain vigilant. “Let this season of love be one of peace, not recklessness. While you celebrate with your families and loved ones, remain security conscious,” he advised.
