On February 4, 2025, Henry Osarodion Osemwenkhia, a Bolt driver, was allegedly assaulted by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Benin City, Edo State. The incident occurred after Mr. Henry dropped off a passenger at a hotel along Limit Road, De-kaso Hotel.
According to reports, Henry had an altercation with some youths, including NSCDC operatives, who allegedly punctured his tires and beat him almost to the point of death. He reported the assault to the New Etete Police Station and was given a medical form to seek treatment. Tragically, he passed away the next day, February 5, 2025, due to injuries sustained during the attack.
The Edo State Police Command arrested four NSCDC officials in connection with the incident. The police assured the public and Henry’s family that a thorough investigation would be conducted to uncover the truth behind his death.
The incident sparked protests by Bolt drivers in Benin City, who demanded justice for their colleague. They carried placards with messages such as “JusticeForHenry”, “Justice for Bolt drivers” and “Enough of the brutality by security agencies”.
The NSCDC, however, denied any involvement in Henry’s death, stating that their officers were only present to maintain order during the altercation. The NSCDC officials claimed they went to the police station voluntarily to assist with the investigation.
The case remains under investigation, and the public awaits the outcome to ensure justice is served for Henry Osarodion Osemwenkhia.
