The Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, has recently stirred controversy with his overt political involvement. His congratulatory statement to Governor Monday Okpebholo on his 100 days in office, coupled with his harsh criticism of former governor Godwin Obaseki, marks a significant departure from the traditionally non-partisan stance of the Benin throne. This shift raises concerns about the integrity and neutrality of the revered institution.

Historically, the Oba of Benin has been a symbol of unity and impartiality, serving as a spiritual and cultural leader rather than a political figure. Previous Obas, such as Erediauwa and Akenzua II, maintained a dignified distance from political affairs, ensuring that the throne remained a beacon of stability and continuity for the people of Benin in particular and Edo in general. Their non-partisan approach allowed them to mediate conflicts and foster harmony without the taint of political bias.
In stark contrast, Oba Ewuare II’s actions have introduced a troubling element of partisanship into the palace. His open support for Ize Iyamu against Obaseki in the 2020 elections and his backing of Monday Okpebholo and the APC against Asue Ighodalo in 2024 are clear indications of his political leanings. Such actions not only undermine the traditional role of the Oba but also risk alienating segments of the populace who may feel disenfranchised by the monarch’s political preferences.

Moreover, the Oba’s recent statements have not been limited to political endorsements. His harsh critique of Obaseki’s administration, describing it as “toxic and detrimental to the state’s psyche:, further exacerbates the perception of bias. This public chastisement is unprecedented and deviates from the expected decorum and neutrality of the throne.
The Oba of Benin’s foray into politics represents a significant departure from the throne’s historical non-partisan stance. This shift not only perverts the traditional role of the Oba but also risks undermining the unity and stability that the institution has long symbolized. It is imperative for the Oba to reconsider his political engagements and political statements and return to the impartiality that has defined the Benin monarchy for centuries.
