Why Tinubu Cannot Be Blamed for Nigeria’s Insecurity – Edo APC Chairman
The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Jarrett Tenebe, has defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against criticisms over insecurity in the country, insisting that the current administration inherited longstanding security challenges.
In an interview, Tenebe outlined the party’s internal plans ahead of the 2027 general elections, including a target of delivering 3.5 million votes from Edo State to the President.
On Party Unity and Congress
Addressing speculation about his relationship with Senator Adams Oshiomhole, Tenebe dismissed claims of division within the party. He stated that although there were differences during the party primaries, members have since worked together through the election period and beyond.
He described his relationship with Oshiomhole as cordial and maintained that there are no cracks within the Edo APC structure. According to him, the forthcoming party congress will be conducted smoothly, followed by the national convention.
Tenebe emphasised that the leader of the party in the state remains Governor Monday Okpebholo, adding that his role as chairman is to support the administration and ensure the delivery of campaign promises.
On Inclusiveness and Party Expansion
Responding to concerns from party members who feel sidelined, Tenebe said the governor’s approach is to unite the state rather than govern along factional lines. He argued that welcoming former political opponents strengthens governance and promotes stability.
He also claimed that several local government chairmen from opposition parties are joining the APC, which he described as evidence of the party’s growing influence in Edo State.
3.5 Million Votes for Tinubu
On the feasibility of securing 3.5 million votes for President Tinubu in 2027, Tenebe expressed confidence that the target is achievable. He disclosed that the party is mobilising registered voters within and outside the state and engaging supporters across the country.
According to him, increased voter turnout and expanded membership will play a key role in meeting the vote target. He added that the APC is actively encouraging citizens to participate in voter registration and electoral processes.
On Opposition and Democratic Balance
When asked whether the influx of opposition figures into the APC could weaken democratic balance, Tenebe said it is not the responsibility of the ruling party to sustain opposition strength. He noted that political association is a constitutional right and that individuals are free to align with any party of their choice.
He rejected claims that inducements or intimidation were driving defections, attributing the movement to what he described as confidence in the President’s leadership and direction.
On Insecurity and National Challenges
Addressing concerns over insecurity and economic hardship, Tenebe maintained that the security situation predates the current administration. He said the President is taking steps to confront the challenges and restore stability.
He referenced historical security developments, including events during previous administrations such as that of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, as part of the broader evolution of Nigeria’s security landscape.
According to Tenebe, while insecurity remains a concern, he believes the federal government is working to address it and that improvements will become more evident over time.
He concluded by reaffirming the Edo APC’s commitment to strengthening party structures, supporting the state government, and mobilising voters ahead of 2027.
