The Edo State Government has officially declared a Lassa fever outbreak following the confirmation of 29 cases and six deaths across affected areas.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Cyril Oshiomhole, made the announcement in Benin City over the weekend, citing a concerning rise in infections, particularly in Etsako West and Esan West Local Government Areas.
“We have recorded 29 confirmed cases of Lassa fever, with six deaths, with notable increase in Etsako West and Esan West Local Government Areas,” he said.
Following a comprehensive epidemiological review and risk assessment conducted by the Edo State Ministry of Health, the government activated all response mechanisms to contain the outbreak.
Emergency Measures Activated
Dr Oshiomhole disclosed that a case manager has been appointed to coordinate clinical management of patients, while all operational pillars of the State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC) have been fully activated.
As part of proactive containment measures, the state government donated Lassa fever response packs to the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH), a key referral centre for infectious disease treatment in the state.
Health authorities say Edo has experienced recurring Lassa fever outbreaks in recent years, necessitating strengthened surveillance and rapid response systems.
Residents Urged to Take Preventive Measures
The Commissioner urged residents to adopt strict preventive practices, emphasizing that Lassa fever is both preventable and treatable if detected early.
Preventive measures highlighted include:
- Proper storage of food items
- Keeping homes and surroundings clean
- Avoiding contact with rodents and their droppings
- Prompt reporting of symptoms such as persistent fever, sore throat, bleeding, and general weakness to the nearest health facility
“Following a careful epidemiological review and risk assessment by the Edo State Ministry of Health, I hereby formally declare a Lassa Fever Outbreak in Edo State,” he stated.
He stressed that early presentation at health facilities significantly improves survival outcomes.
Public Health Advisory
Health officials are intensifying public awareness campaigns across affected local government areas to curb further spread of the disease. Residents are encouraged to seek medical attention immediately if symptoms appear and avoid self-medication.
Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to containing the outbreak and preventing further fatalities through coordinated response efforts and community engagement.
