The Edo State Government has announced that schools resumption is being postponed indefinitely in Edo Central Senatorial District due to escalating security concerns as the dread of kidnappings and violent protests rocks parts of the region.
The Governor, Monday Okpebholo, announced through the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, on Monday that henceforth, all public and private primary and secondary schools in the senatorial district slated to reopen for the second term of the 2025/2026 academic session would remain shut till further notice.
This decision is coming after a weekend protest in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, where residents showed their frustration over repeated kidnappings and insecurity. What started as a peaceful protest later degenerated into violence as hoodlums attacked traders at the livestock market and vandalised the palace of the Onojie of Ekpoma, Zaiki Anthony Abumere II.
According to state authorities, the postponement will give security agencies and community leaders time to address the basic safety concerns underlying the situation and guarantee the well-being of students. Parents, guardians, school proprietors, and other stakeholders were asked to take note and await further announcements on a new resumption date.
The unrest has also disrupted academic activities at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, where ongoing examinations and upcoming events have been suspended, reflecting broader concerns about safety in educational environments.
