The Edo State Government has commenced the enumeration of traders across major markets in the state as part of planned reforms aimed at improving market management, sanitation, and revenue transparency.
Officials from the Ministry of Trade and Industry confirmed that the exercise has begun in selected markets within Benin City, including Oba Market, New Benin Market, and surrounding trading hubs. The enumeration will capture details of traders, shop owners, and informal vendors operating within designated market spaces.
According to the government, the data collected will help address issues such as overcrowding, illegal structures, poor waste management, and unregulated levies. Authorities say the reforms are intended to create safer, more organized markets while protecting traders from multiple taxation.
Some traders welcomed the move, saying it could bring better structure and accountability. Others, however, expressed concerns about possible increases in levies and called on the government to ensure transparency and stakeholder engagement throughout the process.
The state government assured traders that the enumeration is not intended to punish anyone but to support long-term planning and economic growth.
