The Edo State Government has launched a new youth skills acquisition programme aimed at equipping young people with practical skills to improve employability and encourage entrepreneurship across the state.
The programme, unveiled in Benin City on Thursday, will focus on areas such as digital skills, fashion design, agribusiness, carpentry, electrical installation, and automobile repairs. According to state officials, beneficiaries will receive hands-on training, starter tools, and post-training support to help them establish sustainable livelihoods.
The Commissioner for Youth and Humanitarian Affairs said the initiative is designed to reduce youth unemployment and discourage social vices by providing alternative income opportunities. He added that the programme would be implemented in phases, beginning with selected local government areas.
Youth leaders and civil society groups have welcomed the initiative but urged the government to ensure transparency in the selection process and continuity beyond the pilot phase.
