The Edo State Government has announced plans to upgrade several Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the state as part of efforts to improve access to quality healthcare, especially in rural communities.
According to officials from the Edo State Ministry of Health, the upgrade will involve renovation of existing facilities, provision of modern medical equipment, and improved staffing to ensure round-the-clock service delivery. The initiative is expected to begin with selected PHCs in Edo South and Edo North before expanding statewide.
Healthcare workers and residents in underserved areas have long raised concerns over poor infrastructure, shortage of medical supplies, and limited personnel at PHCs. Many residents say they are often forced to travel long distances to access basic medical services.
A government spokesperson stated that the project aligns with the administration’s commitment to strengthening the state’s healthcare system and reducing preventable illnesses and maternal mortality.
Residents have welcomed the announcement but stressed the importance of proper implementation and continuous funding to ensure sustainability.
