Tension is rising in parts of Edo State following an escalating land dispute that has left several families facing possible eviction from properties they claim to have occupied for decades.
Affected residents in communities around Ovia North-East and Egor Local Government Areas say they were recently served quit notices by individuals claiming ownership of the land. Some residents allege the dispute involves multiple claimants, including private developers and traditional landholding families.
Community leaders say the situation has created fear and uncertainty, with families worried about losing their homes and livelihoods. Some affected residents claim they purchased the land legally and possess documentation, while others say the land was allocated by community authorities many years ago.
Human rights advocates have called on the Edo State Government to intervene and prevent forced evictions, urging dialogue and legal resolution to avoid violence.
Government officials say they are aware of the situation and are reviewing land records to determine rightful ownership.
