Tension is mounting across parts of Edo State as parents and guardians protest sudden increases in school fees in several public secondary schools, raising fears of possible closures and student dropouts.
In areas including Benin City, Irrua, and Auchi, parents gathered outside school premises, accusing school authorities of imposing new charges without prior notice or consultation. The fees reportedly cover items such as “development levies,” examination charges, and maintenance costs.
Many parents say the increases come at a time when household incomes are already strained by rising food prices and transportation costs. Some families admitted they may be forced to withdraw their children if the fees are not reviewed.
Parent associations have called on the Edo State Ministry of Education to intervene urgently, warning that the situation could disrupt academic activities if left unresolved. Students have also expressed anxiety, fearing interruptions to their education.
The Ministry of Education acknowledged the protests and stated that investigations are ongoing, assuring parents that no student would be denied access to education while discussions continue.
