Residents of several communities in Benin City and surrounding areas have raised concerns over an increase in night-time robberies, calling on security agencies and the Edo State Government to strengthen security measures.
Affected areas reportedly include parts of Uselu, Aduwawa, Upper Sakponba, and Oluku, where residents say criminal activities have become more frequent in recent weeks. Victims allege that armed robbers operate mostly at night, targeting homes and small businesses.
Community leaders stated that poor street lighting and delayed police response have contributed to the problem. Some residents disclosed that they have resorted to community vigilante groups to supplement security efforts.
In response, the Edo State Police Command confirmed awareness of the situation and said patrols have been intensified in identified hotspots. The command urged residents to report suspicious activities and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
Security analysts stress that a coordinated approach involving improved lighting, community policing, and intelligence gathering is essential to curb criminal activities and restore public confidence.
