A public affairs commentator, Austin Isikhuemen, has praised Governor Monday Okpebholo for what he described as significant strides in road infrastructure development, particularly in Edo Central Senatorial District.
Reacting to the recently announced Ukpenu–Emuhi–Ujiamen–Ehor road contract, Isikhuemen described the move as a major step toward addressing longstanding infrastructure gaps in the Esan axis of the state. He noted that the road project would open up previously underserved communities and unlock vast agricultural potential in the region.
According to him, several communities in Esanland have historically faced road infrastructure challenges, limiting economic growth and access to markets. He argued that the new road project represents a shift toward more balanced development across Edo’s three senatorial districts.
While acknowledging past administrations’ efforts in other parts of the state, he stated that the renewed focus on Edo Central signals deliberate attention to areas that residents have long considered underserved.
The Ukpenu–Emuhi–Ujiamen–Ehor road is expected to link Esan West and Ohunmwonde local government areas, while also strengthening connectivity between Edo Central and Edo South. Observers say the improved access could enhance commercial activity, agricultural productivity, and regional trade.
Isikhuemen emphasised that the axis hosts extensive fertile farmland with strong potential for large-scale food production. Poor road conditions previously made transportation difficult for farmers, often limiting movement to motorcycles. With improved infrastructure, he said farmers would be better positioned to transport produce using larger vehicles, thereby expanding market access.
He suggested that improved connectivity could stimulate new markets within the corridor and attract buyers from other parts of the country, contributing to food security and rural economic growth.
The commentator further observed that Governor Okpebholo has simultaneously undertaken projects in Edo South and Edo North, including flyover construction and interventions in Akoko-Edo, while maintaining focused infrastructure expansion in Edo Central.
Describing the road initiative as both strategic and economically impactful, Isikhuemen said it could significantly transform agrarian communities along the corridor by creating opportunities for prosperity and reducing poverty through improved infrastructure.
He concluded that the governor’s first year in office has demonstrated a strong commitment to road development and expressed optimism that additional projects may follow within the remainder of the tenure.
