Governor Monday Okpebholo is set to formally present 54 units of construction equipment to the 18 Local Government Councils in Edo State in what is being described as a landmark step toward strengthening grassroots governance.
The unveiling ceremony, scheduled to hold in Benin City on Thursday, was announced in a statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Akhere Ebojele.
According to the statement, the initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to practical governance, infrastructure renewal and the empowerment of local councils to directly drive development projects.
Equipment to Boost Rural Infrastructure
The equipment package includes graders, excavators, rollers and other heavy-duty construction machines. These are expected to significantly enhance:
- Road construction and rehabilitation
- Rural access road development
- Drainage and erosion control projects
- Community-based infrastructure works
By placing critical construction tools directly in the hands of local government authorities, the state government aims to accelerate project delivery and reduce bureaucratic delays often associated with centralized execution.
Strategic Grassroots Empowerment
The distribution of the equipment is described as a strategic intervention designed to empower council leadership, stimulate economic activities in rural communities, and ensure visible dividends of democracy across Edo’s three senatorial districts.
Officials say the move will enable councils to respond more swiftly to local infrastructure needs while improving accountability and performance at the grassroots level.
Wike to Commission Equipment
The commissioning ceremony will be performed by the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The event is expected to attract top government officials, political stakeholders, traditional rulers and community leaders from across the state.
Observers note that the rollout signals a broader push by the Okpebholo administration to institutionalize infrastructure-driven development at the local government level.
