On the back of sustained reforms in the education sector by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration, students of Anglican Girls Grammar School (AGGS) have emerged as the best performers in the South-South region, securing their spot to represent the region in a national quiz contest sponsored by the MTN Foundation.
The education sector in Edo State has undergone a significant transformation under the Obaseki-led government with a total overhaul and massive improvement in the overall system.
Edo’s representatives for the national quiz competition are 15-year-old SSS1 students of the state-owned school, including Theresa John Parkson, Benita Omosefe Omonzejele, and Best Osasogie Edobor.
The government has in the past six years focused on delivering superior learning outcomes to students by investing in the professional development of teachers, (employing and training quality teachers to achieve set targets); training and equipping supervisors and quality assurance officers; developing state-owned schools in remote areas and sensitising parents on the need to send their children to school.
The impact of these reforms became even more evident as the Anglican Girls Grammar School (AGGS) defeated over 20 other schools in the South-South region to secure the ticket to represent the region in the MTN Anti Substance Abuse Programme (ASAP) quiz.
The competition which was held virtually in the qualifying stage had three schools representing each State with AGGS emerging as the winners in the South-South region.
The school is among six schools that qualified from the 36 States of the Federation for the final contest scheduled to take place on Friday, June 23 in Abuja.
The MTN ASAP Quiz Competition which was started in 2019 is hosted in collaboration with local and international partners such as the UNODC, NDLEA, and the federal and state ministries of health and education, with the objective of preventing substance abuse among young people in Nigeria.
The students will be competing for a N10 million cash prize and other learning support kits. The second prize is an N5 million cash prize, while the third-place winners are expected to go home with N2 million.
