Authorities of the University of Abuja, also known as Yakubu Gowon University, have expelled 28 students and withdrawn the certificates of 15 former students over various disciplinary offences.
The decision was announced in a statement issued by Dr. Habib Yakoob, Acting Director of the institution’s Information Directorate, following deliberations at the university’s 191st Regular Senate Meeting after reviewing recommendations from the Student Disciplinary Committee.
According to the statement, the affected students were found culpable of offences including threats to life and assault, examination malpractice, conspiracy, burglary, theft, cult-related activities, possession and use of hard drugs, falsification of O’Level results, and failure to appear before the disciplinary panel despite repeated invitations.
The Senate also approved the withdrawal of certificates of 15 former students who reportedly ignored multiple invitations by the disciplinary committee during investigations.
In addition, nine students were cleared of wrongdoing after investigations, while 33 others received warnings for various infractions such as conspiracy, hostel racketeering, and fighting.
The Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to maintaining discipline and ensuring a safe academic environment.
He stated that the university would continue to enforce its rules and regulations without compromise in order to sustain a conducive atmosphere for learning.
