The Edo State Government has intensified the campaign against traffic offenders in the Benin metropolis, vowing to arrest and prosecute any motorist who violates the state’s traffic laws.
The Edo State Public Works Volunteers (PUWOV) Coordinator, Mukhtar Yusuf-Osagie, while briefing journalists in Benin City, said the government has stepped up enforcement to clampdown on all unruly motorists and will ensure that they are made to face the full wrath of the law.
Reassuring the government’s commitment to restore sanity and order on roads in Benin metropolis, the PUWOV Coordinator said the scheme has apprehended another commercial driver who was driving against traffic (one-way).
He said the new arrest has raised to three, the total of persons that have been apprehended since the kick-off of the exercise, reassuring that the apprehended motorists will be duly prosecuted in accordance with the state’s extant laws.
According “Officials of PUWOV have apprehended another motorist with vehicle registration number AGD 84 EA, in the Benin metropolis for driving against traffic. The vehicle, a red Audi saloon, has been impounded, while the driver has been arraigned before a mobile court and will face prosecution in accordance with the state’s extant laws.”
He further noted, “Driving against traffic is a serious and dangerous violation of the law. It puts you, the driver and other road users at risk of serious injury or even death.
“While the government steps up efforts to ensure the free flow of traffic and ensure safety on our roads, we are calling on all road users and motorists to report drivers who flout traffic laws and drive against the traffic (one-way). “Offenders will be apprehended and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. We will not tolerate this behavior on our roads anymore and will do everything in our power to ensure the safety of all road users. Please drive responsibly and follow all traffic laws to help keep our roads safe,” Yusuf-Osagie charged.
