The Edo State Government has initiated enforcement measures following its recent ban on unauthorized revenue collection by transport unions and private consultants. Just one day after thedirective was issued, 12 individualswere arrested for allegedly violatingthe new policy.Announced on August 5, 2025, theban targets groups including theNational Union of Road TransportWorkers (NURTW), Road TransportEmployers Association of Nigeria(RTEAN), ANNEWAT, Drivers onWheel, and Atalakpa RecoveryConcept Ltd-a private firm previouslyinvolved in tax enforcement. These organizations were cited ingovernment statements for alleged involvement in unregulated cashcollections and reported incidents of harassment and intimidation
According to the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa lkhilothe decision was prompted by concerns over a resurgence ofunauthorized revenue activities, whichwere described as detrimental to thestate’s economic and social stability. The directive prohibits any individual or group affiliated with the listed entities from collecting levies, dues,or taxes from the public. Citizens have been advised to report violations to the Edo State Special Task force, led by SP Michael Anetor.
On August 6, 2025, enforcement began with the arrest of 12 individuals accused of continuing to collect money from road users despite the ban. The government has indicated that these actions are part of broader efforts to uphold law and order and ensure compliance with the newdirective.Governor Monday Okpebholoemphasized that the administration intends to address unlawful levy collection and stated that violators would be subject to legal consequences. “The era of using unions as fronts to harass, intimidateor extort drivers and road users in thename of revenue collection is over,” he said.The development is part of ongoingefforts by the state to reform itsrevenue system.
