Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering the multi-billion-naira Port Harcourt Ring Road project, promising that it will be ready for commissioning by October this year.
Fubara gave the assurance on Tuesday during an extensive inspection of the 50.15-kilometre project, which cuts across six local government areas — Port Harcourt City, Obio/Akpor, Ikwerre, Etche, Eleme, and Ogu-Bolo.
The governor stressed that the large-scale infrastructure project, which includes six flyovers and a river-crossing bridge, remains a top priority despite the political tensions that have shaped Rivers State’s leadership landscape in recent months.
According to him, construction giant Julius Berger Nigeria Plc has been fully remobilised to site and expressed readiness to meet the revised timeline, provided the current funding pace is sustained.
Speaking on the origins of the project, Fubara openly acknowledged the role of his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, describing him as the visionary behind the initiative.
“This project is very important considering the person who conceived it, my Oga, the Honourable Minister. He had a very big vision. He believed that if I achieved this project in record time, people would be happy with me,” Fubara said.
He added that completing the project aligns with his own commitment to advancing the state’s development goals.
“Notwithstanding whatever is happening, it is also my wish and my struggle to ensure that that wish comes through. So you can understand the importance of this project to us and to everyone who means well for our dear state,” he stated.
The Port Harcourt Ring Road is designed as a strategic bypass aimed at easing traffic congestion in the state capital while linking expanding industrial and residential districts.
Originally launched with a 36-month completion timeline, the project is now being accelerated and is expected to stand as one of the signature infrastructure achievements of the Fubara administration.
The development comes shortly after a peace meeting brokered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House in Abuja between Governor Fubara and Minister Wike, signalling possible efforts to ease political tensions in Rivers State.
