In a remarkable display of compassion and dedication to the welfare of Edo State’s citizens, Governor Godwin Obaseki has granted clemency to ten inmates who had less than one year remaining on their sentences. The announcement was made by Hon. Justice P.O. Isibor (Rtd), Chairman of the Edo State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy. According to Justice Isibor, the Council received a letter from the Benin Correctional Service on November 5, 2024, requesting clemency for inmates nearing the end of their sentences. The Council meticulously reviewed the applications and made unanimous recommendations, which Governor Obaseki graciously approved.
Justice Isibor highlighted the Governor’s empathetic approach, stating, “Mr. Governor is respectfully invited to consider and approve the recommendations of the Council.” This act of mercy is a testament to Governor Obaseki’s deep-seated love for the people of Edo State and his dedication to ensuring justice is tempered with compassion.
The inmates who benefited from this act of clemency are Igwe Kelechukwu, Esazobor Ohioze, Gift Osaretun, Takyi Rockson, Dikuar Friday, Ossai Glory, Augustine Sunday, Daulagha Ebifagha Godluck, James Paul, and Anas Isah. Their release not only marks a new beginning for them but also reflects the Governor’s belief in second chances and rehabilitation.
