The Chairman of Oredo Local Government Council, Dr. Tom Obaseki has disclosed that the reconstruction of Ekiosa (market structures) will commence January, 2024. He made the disclosure while playing host to traders from the Market, who were on a courtesy visit at the Local Government Secretariat in Benin City.
During the visit, the Council Boss assured traders that the Council is committed to improving their lives and businesses. He said that upon completion of the project, it would foster development and industrialization within the Market community.
Dr. Tom assured that on completion of the reconstruction of the market structures, it is those who currently own stores in the market that would be the first set of beneficiaries of the stores, which will be judiciously allocated.
He clarified that temporary provisions have been made to accommodate traders of Ekiosa who would be displaced as a result of the project. According to him, “You will be given temporary stores at other markets within Oredo LGA, and be rest assured that the temporary stores will be hundred percent free of charge.”
Commending the initiative, the President of the Traders Welfare Union, Comrade Lucky Orupke, acknowledged the significant impact the market reconstruction would have on traders and praised the Local Government’s commitment to progress. “We will continue to partner with the Oredo Chairman and his vision to bring growth and development to the Local Government,” he said.
On her part, the Secretary of Ekiosa, Mrs. Jennifer Idemudia, expressed satisfaction on the Chairman’s swift response to the plight of traders, stating her belief that the new Ekiosa will be beneficial to traders and customers.
Dr. Obaseki disclossed that the work will be done by two contractors in order to reach completion in a year.
Recall that Ekiosa faced a challenging period since the fire incident that gutted its structures on December 22, 2019, leaving the market in a dilapidated state. With the plan of reconstruction, a new chapter is set to begin, bringing hope and prosperity to Ekiosa and its community.
