Senator Monday Okpebholo has ordered the demolition of buildings linked to kidnappers and cultists. The operation began in Benin City with the destruction of a residential duplex allegedly used for kidnapping and organ trafficking.
Speaking on behalf of Okpebholo, Chief Press Secretary Fred Itua revealed that authorities had also sealed off Eterno hotel belonging to Hon. Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, Director-General of the Asue/Ogie Campaign Organisation, and an event center, both suspected, according to Okpebholo, of serving as meeting points for cult groups involved in deadly attacks. Okpebholo’s office says that the crackdown is in response to recent violent incidents and is backed by state laws.
The demolished building was reportedly the site of a horrific crime involving the murder of a young woman. Security agencies tracked down and arrested the suspect in Lagos, and plans are underway to bring him back to Edo State for prosecution.
Okpebholo assured the public that this initiative is purely a security measure and not politically motivated, although many critics have called this, especially the sealing of Eterno Hotel, a political witch-hunt.
Senator Monday Okpebholo also said more properties used for criminal activities will be targeted as part of the government’s wider strategy to combat organized crime.
Meanwhile, the father of the suspect, Martins Oghenewore, expressed deep anguish over his son’s actions, describing years of troubled behavior that culminated in tragedy. He recounted his efforts to rehabilitate his son, including seeking medical and traditional intervention, but lamented that nothing could prevent the devastating consequences.
Do you think these demolitions are politically motivated? Or perhaps the government is fighting crime?
