The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticized newly sworn-in Governor Monday Okpebholo and his Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, for their comments on the standards of the Stella Obasanjo Hospital and other hospitals in the state.
In a statement, Chris Osa Nehikhare, Publicity Secretary of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, expressed disbelief at Cyril Oshiomhole’s remarks. Nehikhare pointed out the irony, given that Cyril’s father, Adams Aliu Oshiomhole, oversaw the construction of the Edo Specialist Hospital, which suffered a structural collapse that tragically killed two citizens.
The PDP accused the Okpebholo administration of attempting to undermine the significant contributions of the Stella Obasanjo Hospital to the state’s healthcare system for political gain. Nehikhare described this move as petty and immature.
“We are appalled by the behavior of the Okpebholo administration in trying to diminish the impact of the Stella Obasanjo Hospital,” Nehikhare stated. “The hospital is widely recognized as one of the best in the South-South region, thanks to the investments made by the previous administration under Mr. Godwin Obaseki.”
Nehikhare further criticized Cyril Oshiomhole for making unfounded claims about the hospital’s structural integrity, especially given his father’s history with the Edo Specialist Hospital. He highlighted the hypocrisy of criticizing a fully functional facility when Adams Oshiomhole’s administration had its own significant failings.
The PDP urged the Okpebholo administration to focus on governance rather than engaging in political vendettas. They called on Cyril Oshiomhole and the current government to acknowledge the positive transformations at the Stella Obasanjo Hospital under Obaseki’s leadership and to refrain from further baseless criticisms.
