Doctors under the aegis of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in the state of Edo in Nigeria have begun a strike action in all public health facilities in the state.
According to the body, this move is a result of unresolved issues bordering on doctors’ welfare, working conditions, and their entitlements. It is alleged that the strike has affected various government-owned hospitals, with only emergencies being attended to in some of them.
In a statement issued by the leadership of the Nigeria Medical Association in Edo State, the doctors explained that after various consultations with relevant authorities, they were left with no choice but to down tools.
Some of the key concerns that have been raised include poor remuneration, inadequate medical equipment, delayed promotions, and unsafe working environments. The association said that the strike is not aimed at patients suffering from these services that have been rendered by medical practitioners in the state.
“It is clear that we are committed to the health of Edo citizens, but our members will not continue working under conditions that compromise their safety and professionalism.”
As a response to this new situation, concerned residents have called on the state government of Edo to intervene in order to prevent further disruptions to healthcare services, especially among those who genuinely need it.
As of the time of the filing of this report, the Edo State Government is yet to respond to the development. However, the NMA said that it is open to negotiation and would be willing to rethink its stance if the process of negotiation commences.
