The Federal Government has rolled out new measures to help ensure that stabilized food price levels are maintained as concerns over high inflation rates begin to emerge.
According to the officials, the containment measures include increased support for local farmer program, improvement in the distribution system of subsidized foodstuffs, as well as improvement in monitoring of food chains aimed at preventing artificial creation of scarcity and subsequent pricing along the chains.
In his Tuesday address, the government spokesperson explained that the initiatives will help promote local manufacturing, and at the same time, make foodstuffs available in markets at affordable costs.
“The aim is to shield Nigerians from high increases in the price of food, and to help Nigerian farmers to farm sustainably,” the spokesperson stated.
The government also announced its plans to develop its strategic grain stores and work with state governments to ensure access to necessary food commodities, especially in urban areas.
This comes amidst the continued struggle that households in Nigeria face in coping with the rising cost of food. This has led to demands from trade unions and civil societies for government intervention.
The government assured Nigerians that the effects of the policies would be visible in a short time. This is in relation to agricultural sector reforms.
