Governor Godwin Obaseki Warned of Current Hardships but Went Unheard
Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has attributed the nation’s current socioeconomic challenges to flawed leadership decisions made by the country’s leaders. In a conversation with journalists in Benin City, Edo State’s capital, Obaseki, drawing from his background as an investment banker, revealed that he foresaw the hardships plaguing Nigerians today, which stem from ill-conceived economic choices by the nation’s leaders.
He noted that he had raised alarms and advocated for corrective actions to address the dire situation long before it materialized but was unfortunately ignored.
Governor Obaseki acknowledged the significant hardships that Nigerians are currently enduring and urged them to remain resilient, holding onto hope in these tough times. He expressed his insight into how the economy operates and how the nation arrived at this point. He further emphasized his longstanding concerns, stating, “I have been shouting since I became Governor that the way we are going and the kind of decision many of us politicians were making will bring about hardship.”
Obaseki stressed that the current state of Nigeria is in stark contrast to its past and the abundance of resources it possesses. He noted that the country’s challenges are largely self-inflicted, particularly by its leaders. He highlighted the need for leaders to be willing to make sacrifices and prioritize the welfare of the people.
In a call to action, Obaseki emphasized, “If you are a leader and you are not ready to sacrifice yourself, then you are not ready for leadership. Leadership is not about personal gain; it’s about serving the people.” He pointed out that the suffering Nigerians face today is a direct result of inadequate leadership.
Governor Obaseki concluded by highlighting Nigeria’s vast resources and its potential to be self-sufficient. He questioned why the nation, blessed with abundant resources, is not utilizing them to address its issues.
