Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, has labeled the illegal dissolution of local government councils by state governors as a treasonable offence. Speaking at a recent event organized by the Nigeria Bar Association in Abuja, Fagbemi highlighted the ongoing disregard for the Supreme Court’s rulings and constitutional provisions by certain governors who persist in unlawfully dissolving elected local councils.
Fagbemi expressed concern over the impact of such actions on the democratic process and governance at the grassroots level. He criticized state Attorneys General and Commissioners for Justice for their failure to provide sound legal advice to their governors, thereby enabling these illegal dissolutions. The AGF called for stringent penalties and accountability measures to be implemented against governors and officials who continue to flout the law.
He also underscored the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring that local government councils function independently, as intended by the constitution. This, he argued, is essential for the effective administration of services and development projects that directly benefit the local populace.
