The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, has issued a firm statement addressing the growing calls for his removal. The controversy stems from recent defections within the Assembly, which have shifted the balance of power in favor of the All Progressives Congress (APC). With the APC now holding a majority of 13 members out of 24, political groups and stakeholders have intensified their demands for a change in leadership.
Speaker Agbebaku, however, remains resolute. In a press briefing held at the Assembly complex in Benin City, he stated, “Leadership is not about party affiliation; it is about serving the people of Edo State with integrity and dedication. I have always prioritized the welfare of our citizens above political interests, and I will continue to do so.”
The Speaker’s statement comes in response to a communiqué issued by the Edo North Conscience (ENC), a political group advocating for his removal. The ENC has argued that Agbebaku’s position as Speaker is no longer tenable, given that his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is now in the minority. The group has also accused him of past undermined the APC during state assembly elections.
Agbebaku dismissed these allegations as politically motivated, emphasizing his commitment to maintaining stability within the Assembly. “The Edo State House of Assembly is an institution that transcends party politics. My focus remains on legislative excellence and ensuring that the voices of all Edo people are heard,” he said.
The Speaker also called for unity among lawmakers, urging them to rise above partisan divides. “This is a time for collaboration, not conflict. The people of Edo State expect us to work together to address the challenges facing our state, not to engage in power struggles,” he added.
