The Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, on Thursday, led thousands of Edo women to major roads and streets within the Benin metropolis to galvanize support for candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Saturday, March 18 House of Assembly elections.
Speaking at the rally, Mrs. Obaseki thanked the women for their relentless support for the state government over the past six years, reassuring them that the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration will continue to prioritize projects and programmes to improve the livelihoods of the people.
The women, who trooped out in their numbers dressed in their colourful native attires representing their different ethnic groups, pledged to work for the victory of the party and its candidates at the poll on Saturday, March 18.
Addressing the women, the Edo First Lady said, “Since independence, there has been no governor in Edo State like Governor Godwin Obaseki, apart from the late Samuel Ogbemudia.
“We, the women, have so much benefited from this Government. No government in Nigeria has as many women in its administration as Edo State. Governor Godwin Obaseki has pushed and encouraged women to higher positions in politics and governance.”
She continued: “For this House of Assembly elections, we have also made sure that women emerged candidates, which is why the PDP has the most female candidates out of all the political parties contesting in Edo State for the house of assembly seats.
“This is for our good as women because only the people present during the making of laws can make proper inputs and with these women representing us during deliberations, they will become the voice of the women so that more consideration can be given to women of the state in every policy and law deliberated upon.”
Mrs. Obaseki charged, “This is why we must come out to support the PDP candidates if we want Edo to move forward. Let’s shun those who are out there to cause chaos and mayhem. Let’s support good governance; let’s support Governor Godwin Obaseki and the PDP candidates.”
Also, the PDP candidate for Oredo-West Constituency, Dr. Aisosa Amadasun, said the PDP has four women contesting for seats at the Saturday House of Assembly polls, urging women to come out en masse to vote for the candidates of the PDP for quality representation at the House.
