The Nigerian Senate has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organize by-elections for two vacant senatorial seats in Edo Central (Monday Okpebholo) and Anambra South. Senate President Godswill Akpabio made this announcement during a plenary session, officially declaring the seats vacant and urging INEC to act promptly in accordance with constitutional guidelines.

The Anambra South seat has been unoccupied since July 2024, following the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, while the Edo Central seat became vacant after Senator Monday Okpebholo left. INEC had previously indicated that it was awaiting a formal request from the Senate to proceed with the elections.
