…makes security preparations ahead of the upcoming festive period
Benin City, Edo State – Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has reiterated his administration’s dedication to maintaining law and order across the state. During the latest Edo State Security Council meeting, Obaseki announced the resumption of the Edo State Vigilante Network following the conclusion of the state’s recent gubernatorial election.
In his address, the Governor praised the residents of Edo State for their peaceful conduct throughout the election, noting that no lives were lost despite the electoral outcome. Obaseki assured citizens that enhanced security measures are in place ahead of the festive “ember” months, a period historically associated with an increase in crimes and road accidents.

The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Nemi Edwin-Iwo, has committed to taking all necessary steps to restore peace in Okpella, located in the Edo North region, where local conflicts have persisted. Obaseki stressed that unauthorized revenue collection will not be tolerated, promising swift legal action against violators.
“We are grateful to the people of Edo State for a peaceful election. As we move into the festive period, our government is working closely with relevant agencies to ensure safety, reduce accidents, and curb crime,” said Governor Obaseki. “The Commissioner of Police has assured us that peace will be restored in Okpella, and all issues will be resolved.”
Security Plans for Festive Season
The Governor also highlighted the state’s security plans for the remaining months of the year. The focus will be on reducing road accidents and curbing festive-related crimes. Relevant security agencies are set to roll out their strategies to ensure a safe festive season for residents.

Obaseki expressed concerns over the rising problem of drug abuse in the state, especially among minors and women. Reports have indicated that even pregnant women are involved in drug peddling, raising alarms about the far-reaching consequences. The state government is set to collaborate with federal agencies to intensify campaigns and sensitization programs aimed at tackling drug use and trafficking.
Resumption of Edo State Vigilante Corps
Obaseki clarified the temporary suspension of the Edo State Vigilante Corps during the election period, noting that the directive from the Inspector General of Police applied only to election duties. With the elections concluded, the vigilante network is set to resume its activities as per the law.
“The vigilante corps were only suspended from election duties. Now that the elections are over, they will resume their duties in securing our communities,” Obaseki explained.
The security council meeting was attended by key officials, including Edo State Deputy Governor, Engr. Godwin Omobayo, Head of Service, Anthony Okungbowa, Chief of Staff, Osaigbovo Iyoha, and Commissioner of Police, Nemi Edwin-Iwo.
