President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a commendation to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, following the conclusion of the FCT Area Council elections.
The electoral exercise ended with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) securing a dominant majority, winning five of the six available chairmanship seats across the territory. The results mark a significant consolidation of political control for the ruling party in the nation’s capital.
A breakdown of the political dynamics behind the polls revealed a fractured opposition but a clear showing of the FCT Minister’s localized political machinery. While mainstream APC candidates successfully captured five councils, a specific political bloc of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to Minister Wike secured the remaining chairmanship seat in Gwagwalada Area Council.
In his post-election remarks, President Tinubu highlighted Wike’s strategic role in stabilizing the capital’s political landscape. The President credited the FCT Minister’s coordination and overarching influence as key factors in delivering a favorable and unified political outcome for the administration.
Political analysts note that the 5-1 split reflects the unique and complex influence the former Rivers State Governor currently wields. The success of both the ruling party and his own loyalist faction within the PDP highlights his tightening grip on Abuja’s grassroots politics since his appointment as FCT Minister.
The newly elected chairmen across Abaji, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Kwali, and the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) are expected to be sworn in shortly to begin their administrative tenures.
