Benin City, Edo State – In a shocking turn of events, Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party’s candidate in the Edo governorship election, has lost his polling unit to Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). According to results released on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal, PDP secured 41 votes, APC got 19 votes, and Labour Party managed only 2 votes in Unit 11, Ward 6 of Oredo Local Government Area.
The results also showed that APC’s Monday Okpebholo and PDP’s Asue Ighodalo are leading in their strongholds, Edo North and Edo South respectively. In Etsako West Local Government Area, APC garnered 90 votes, LP got 13 votes, and PDP secured 85 votes. Similarly, in Owan West, APC scored 90 votes, LP 13, and PDP 75. In Uhunmwonde, APC had 83 votes, LP 6, and PDP 47.
In Egor Local Government Area, APC secured 17 votes, while PDP took 22. In Oredo Local Government Area’s New Benin Unit 27, APC scored 36 votes, LP 5, and PDP 56. Notably, in Ikpoba-Okha Ward 7 Unit 17, where PDP’s Deputy Governorship candidate Osarodion Ogie Esq. cast his vote, PDP dominated with 216 votes, while APC got 29.
Governor Godwin Obaseki, addressing public servants and pensioners earlier in the week, urged them to support Ighodalo for continuity and progress. “We cannot afford to slow down,” Obaseki stressed. “Saturday’s election is crucial. Electing Dr. Ighodalo will ensure continuity and progress.”
The Edo State Governorship Election is ongoing, with results expected to be announced soon. The election is shaping up to be a keenly contested race between the top contenders.
