In an attempt to prevent a repeat of what happened in Benin City in late last year, Governor Monday Okpebholo is currently engaged in a high-stakes meeting with selected members of the Benin Traditional Council.
The urgent meeting is coming against the backdrop of reported renewed discord between the Palace of the Oba of Benin and the Museum of West African Art management. Insiders at Government House indicate that the Governor is looking to facilitate a “political solution” to the crisis before the Museum of West African Art’s “soft opening” next month.
“The crisis is over the returned Benin Bronzes and other cultural heritage in their custodianship and display,” explains Tony Ikhazor of MOWAA. While MOWAA functions as an independent trust through its partnership with international organizations, the Benin Traditional Council claims that the “Oba of Benin remains the custodian of the heritage of the Edo people” which is the bone of contention here.
The tensions came to a boil in November 2025, when rallies by palace loyalists marred the opening events of the museum, prompting a suspension of activities for a short while.
Looking for a Middle Ground “The Governor is concerned about public perception,” a source from the Ministry of Arts and Culture said. “Edo State is the cultural capital of Nigeria. We cannot have the Palace and MOWAA, a foremost cultural institution, at odds. The Governor is offering a balanced approach that will allow both to thrive while recognizing the power of the Oba”.
The fate of this meeting is yet to be known as it is reported to have been ongoing as at the time of filing this news. The people are waiting to hear any response regarding this sensitive issue that involves so many aspects of Saudi culture.
