The Edo State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on Governor Monday Okpebholo to engage only with what it describes as the legally recognised leadership of the union in the state.
In a statement issued in Benin City, the council cautioned the public and government officials against dealing with individuals or groups allegedly presenting themselves as acting leaders of the Edo NLC without proper authorisation.
The statement, signed by Prof. Monday Igbafen, maintained that the Prof. Igbafen-led Caretaker Committee remains the legitimate leadership of the Edo State NLC, having been constituted by the National Central Working Committee (CWC) of the Congress.
According to the council, a previously existing State Administrative Council led by Bernard Egwakhide had been dissolved by the NLC’s national body in August 2025 over alleged violations of the organisation’s rules and constitution.
The Edo NLC stressed that labour laws grant trade unions the authority to determine their leadership structures and urged the state government to respect that process. It added that only communications or representations approved by the caretaker committee should be considered valid.
The committee also reaffirmed its commitment to resolving internal issues within the Edo NLC and called for cooperation from the state government and other stakeholders to ensure stable industrial relations.
